Slice your smoked sausage into circles or into fourths of circles (the smaler works better for kiddos.)
Add olive oil to a pot on medium heat. You need it to be a pot, not a pan so there is plenty of room for the whole dish to come together. Saute the onions and smoked sausage until lightly browned.
Add the garlic and let it cook for 30 seconds (you don't want it to burn!)
Add the chicken broth, tomatoes (undrained), milk, and pasta to the pot. Bring the mixture to a boil, cover, and reduce the heat to low. Simmer for about 12 to 14 minutes or until the pasta is tender.
Turn off the heat and add the cheddar jack cheese. Give it a few minutes to cool then serve.
