I went through a phase that started with the question… what does everyone do with the c-shaped sausages at the grocery store. I grew up in a household that never used those in recipes, so I had no idea what to do with them. It led me down a dark path on Pinterest filled with smoked sausage pastas, smoked sausage soups, and more. A few of my favorite recipes came out of that time, and this is definitely one of them.

Pro-tip for the moms out there… these sausages look similar enough to hot dogs when you cut them up. If you have a picky eater in your home, this can now be known as hot dog pasta for you!

That trick is exactly how I got my picky eater to fall in love with smoked sausage, and this recipe became a weekly repeat recipe in our home.

Smoked Sausage Pasta

This is a simple smoked sausage recipe that we have on repeat in our household.
Prep Time 10 minutes
Cook Time 25 minutes
Total Time 35 minutes
Servings: 4
Course: Main Course
Cuisine: American

Ingredients

  • 1 tbsp Olive Oil
  • 1 Smoked Sausage (Beef or Turkey is fine)
  • 1/2 cup Diced White Onion
  • 2 tsp Garlic
  • 2 cups Chicken Broth
  • 1 can Diced Tomatoes (Rotel if you like it spicy or Basil and Oregeno if you don't like spicy.)
  • 1/2 cup Milk
  • 8 oz Bowtie Pasta
  • 1 cup Cheddar Jack Cheese

Method

  1. Slice your smoked sausage into circles or into fourths of circles (the smaler works better for kiddos.)
  2. Add olive oil to a pot on medium heat. You need it to be a pot, not a pan so there is plenty of room for the whole dish to come together. Saute the onions and smoked sausage until lightly browned.
  3. Add the garlic and let it cook for 30 seconds (you don't want it to burn!)
  4. Add the chicken broth, tomatoes (undrained), milk, and pasta to the pot. Bring the mixture to a boil, cover, and reduce the heat to low. Simmer for about 12 to 14 minutes or until the pasta is tender.
  5. Turn off the heat and add the cheddar jack cheese. Give it a few minutes to cool then serve.
